Unlocking Leadership Potential with Management Apprenticeships
North Wales’ employers are investing in management apprenticeships and work-based training to develop their workforce.
Through partnerships with Busnes@LlandrilloMenai, organisations such as the NHS, Councils and private sector clients such as Affinity Flying Services, Rhug Estate and Celtest Co Ltd are upskilling their leadership teams, customer service, digital marketing, and social media, in order to ensure their businesses’ thrive.
One such success story is Charles Conway, an NHS Shift Manager at CALL Helpline, the Mental Health Helpline for Wales. Despite considerable experience, Charles recognised the need for formal training and enrolled in the Level 3 ILM Apprenticeship in Management.
“I initially thought the course would just be writing down what I already knew—but nothing could have been further from the truth! The apprenticeship is a journey of self-discovery. It helped me reflect on my leadership style, understand how different approaches impact my team, and align my work with the organisation’s values.”
Through the apprenticeship, Charles gained new leadership insights and learned from other managers within Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB). Now, he’s preparing to progress to the Level 4 ILM Apprenticeship in Management.
“It’s a time commitment, but it’s absolutely worth it. If you’re stepping into management or even have years of experience, I’d highly recommend an apprenticeship. You’ll gain valuable skills, learn from others, and grow as a leader.”
Sue Holdsworth, Programme Area Manager – Business and Digital commented:
“Investing in apprenticeships isn’t just about upskilling staff—it’s about future-proofing businesses. By providing structured training, employers not only develop confident, capable leaders but also improve staff retention and create clear pathways for career progression. We’ve seen firsthand how management apprenticeships help organisations nurture talent, strengthen teams, and plan for the future.”
Alongside management apprenticeships, work-based training is available in key business areas such as customer service, digital marketing, and social media, helping employees build confidence and expertise while applying new skills directly to the workplace.
