AER Cymru was established 20 years ago and now employs 20 people, operating across North Wales. The company’s services include electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work, with projects ranging from replacing a fuse or washer to large-scale, multi-million-pound schemes. Four members of the AER team have taken part in the Net Zero Gwynedd Training.

Why did you decide to enrol in Net Zero Gwynedd Training?

With increasing demand for the latest green energy technology in homes and businesses, as a company, we were looking for ways to develop our workforce. The demand for greater sustainability and energy efficiency continues to grow, and we knew that this training would provide the team with the necessary skills to ensure we remain at the forefront of developments in the sector. With free courses and support available locally, this was a fantastic opportunity for us to develop both individual skills and our services as a company.

How have the skills you’ve learnt been useful to you and your company?

The skills our team members have gained have been incredibly valuable from a personal development perspective. The direct access to the latest knowledge on managing green energy systems has been particularly beneficial. For us, it means we can continue to grow while ensuring our services comply with the latest regulations. It also gives our customers confidence that our team has the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver the highest standard of service.

Describe your company:

We are a small, family-run electrical services company. We focus on domestic projects, including rewiring older homes, electrical installations, and fault finding. We provide some commercial services, like Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) and safety checks for hotels and self-catering accommodation.

Which courses have you taken?

  • EAL L3 Award in the Installation of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems
  • EAL Level 3 in the Requirements for the Installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Points
  • LCL Level 3 in Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS)

Why did you decide to sign up with Net Zero Training Gwynedd?

We decided to sign up with the scheme because we were eager to improve our skills. When this opportunity came up and we learnt it was fully funded and local, we were thrilled.

Have the skills you’ve learnt been useful to you and your company?

Yes, incredibly useful. We now have the capability to start installing EV charging points, which we plan to offer our customers soon. We've gained skills in solar panel and storage battery installation and maintenance which allows us to expand on the services we offer. In all it means we can advise customers on how to store energy and save more.

Why did you decide to sign up with Net Zero Training Gwynedd?

The courses are very relevant to what we do. We were pleased to to work with Busnes@LlandrilloMenai and CIST and the fact that the courses are fully funded has been great, helping us free up budget for other aspects of looking after our customers and their homes.

Have the skills you’ve learnt been useful to you and your company?

Thanks to the scheme we have upskilled our team so that they can install the latest technology in customers' homes to solve some of the challenges they face. The courses have also helped raise our surveyors' and inspectors’ awareness of the different types of technology available to reduce carbon, improve household efficiency and aim for a net zero future.

DEG is a social enterprise supporting community action across north west Wales. The aim is to increase capacity to deal with the rising cost of fossil fuels, improve our natural environment and move towards zero carbon communities.

Why did you decide to sign up with Net Zero Training Gwynedd?

I was keen to develop my skills to fulfil my job as a Community Energy Officer in the Caernarfon and Dyffryn Peris area. When giving advice and carrying out energy surveys, I think it’s important that residents are served by locally trained people.

Have the skills you’ve learnt been useful to you and your company?

Certainly, especially as one of my duties is conducting energy surveys in the homes of people who want to be more efficient or reduce fuel costs. As a next step, I’ve signed up for the Older and Traditional Buildings course. The scheme is very rewarding, and I would encourage people to sign up.

The centre, which is based in Llangefni has a proven track record providing the skills and training individuals and businesses need to thrive in the rapidly evolving field of carbon reduction technologies by providing professional accredited training and developing provision in emerging green technologies.

Tŷ Gwyrddfai

Based at Penygroes in Gwynedd, Tŷ Gwyrddfai is a new, world-leading decarbonisation centre. It is a collaborative project between Adra, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai and Bangor University that has transformed the former Northwood tissue factory in Penygroes into a decarbonisation hub ensuring North West Wales will be at the forefront of the decarbonisation agenda, working with communities and businesses to retrofit homes over the next 10 years.
