Cyn-fyfyriwr Chweched Y Rhyl yn codi pac i weithio gyda diemyntau!
Mae cyn-fyfyriwr o Chweched Y Rhyl newydd orffen Doethuriaeth mewn diemyntau yn Imperial College, Llundain ac mae ar ei ffordd i Efrog Newydd a New Jersey i weithio mewn sefydliad sy'n cynnal ymchwil ym maes diemyntau!
Yn ôl yn 2016 roedd Daniel Jones, a fagwyd yn Y Rhyl yn un o'r 14 yn y DU i gael ei dderbyn i ddilyn cwrs doethuriaeth mewn Photo-ymoleuedd Diemyntau yn Imperial College, Llundain mewn cydweithrediad â 'The Diamond Science and Technology Centre for Doctoral Training', Prifysgol Warwick. Ar ôl cwblhau'r Ddoethuriaeth cyflwynwyd gradd Doethur mewn Athroniaeth i Daniel, y cymhwyster uchaf i fyfyriwr ac un sy'n rhoi'r hawl iddo ddefnyddio'r teitl Doethur.
Teitl ei draethawd oedd: 'Datblygid microsgop aml-ddimensynol a'i ddefnydd ym maes darlunio a sbectrosgopeg diffygion ymoleuol mewn diemyntau'. Mae ar fin hedfan draw i UDA i weithio i sefydliad ymchwil sydd â diddordeb mewn offeryniaeth ar gyfer diemyntau.
Daeth Daniel yn ôl i Goleg Y Rhyl yr wythnos hon i roi cyflwyniad i fyfyrwyr ar ei brofiadau yn Chweched y Rhyl, bywyd prifysgol, ei yrfa hyd yma a'i gariad newydd at ddiemwntau.
Roedd o'n un o'r criw cyntaf i ddilyn eu cyrsiau lefel A yn Chweched y Rhyl yn 2010 ar ôl cyfnod yn Rhyl High School. Dilynodd gyrsiau lefel A mewn Ffiseg, Cemeg a Mathemateg yn ogystal â Bagloriaeth Cymru ac As mewn Cemeg ac TGCh.
Wrth drafod ei gyfnod yn Chweched y Rhyl meddai: "Ces i brofiadau gwych yn ystod fy nwy flynedd yma. Mae Chweched y Rhyl yn lle cyfeillgar a braf, a faswn i ddim ble rydw i heddiw oni bai am gefnogaeth a dawn dysgu tiwtoriaid y coleg yma.
Yn dilyn ei gyfnod yn Chweched Y Rhyl aeth Daniel ymlaen i gwblhau cwrs Meistr cyfunol dros gyfnod o bedair blynedd yn Aberystwyth. Aeth ymlaen i ddilyn cwrs MSc ym Mhrifysgol Warwick am flwyddyn ac yna cwrs PhD dros gyfnod o dair blynedd yn Imperial College.
Dywedodd: "Mi wnes i gwblhau dau brosiect am ddiemwntau fel rhan o fy nghwrs prifysgol a dyna pryd dechreuais i wirioni arnynt. Unwaith y clywais i am y ganolfan ddoethuriaeth roeddwn i'n benderfynol o wneud cais i fynd yno er mai nifer cyfyngedig o lefydd sydd ar gael yn y DU.

In 2016, Daniel Jones - who grew up in Rhyl - was one of only 14 in the UK to be accepted to do a PhD in the Photoluminescence of Diamonds at Imperial College, London, through the Diamond Science and Technology Centre for Doctoral Training, based at Warwick University. After recently completing his PhD, Daniel was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree and is permitted to use the title ‘Dr’.
His thesis was entitled: ‘Development of a multi-dimensional luminosity microscope and its application to imaging and spectroscopy of luminescent defects in diamond’. He is now about to jet off to the USA to work for a research institution that has interest in instrumentation for diamonds.
Not forgetting his roots, Daniel came back to Rhyl College a few years after completing his A-levels there, to give a talk to students on his experiences at the Rhyl Sixth, university life, his fledging career, and his newly-found love for diamonds.
He was one of the first AS-level cohort to start at the Rhyl Sixth in 2010, after completing his studies at Rhyl High School. He completed his A-levels in Physics, Chemistry and Maths, as well as gaining the Welsh Baccalaureate and AS-levels in Chemistry and ICT.
Speaking about his time at the Rhyl Sixth, he said: “I had an absolutely fantastic experience over the two years. Rhyl Sixth is very friendly and accommodating, and without the talent and support of the tutors, I wouldn’t be in the position I am in today.”
After Rhyl Sixth, Daniel completed a four-year integrated Masters’ degree at Aberystwyth University. He will then study for a one-year MSc degree at Warwick University before completing his three-year PhD at Imperial College. A PhD is a Doctorate of Philosophy, and is a prestigious qualification that demonstrates talent, academic excellence and a thirst for knowledge.
He said: “I did two projects on diamonds during my university studies at Aberystwyth, and I soon realised that they were my new passion. As soon as I heard about the doctoral centre, I was keen to apply, even though UK places were limited.”
