Buddsoddiad mewn pynciau STEM yn dod â labordai o'r radd flaenaf i gampws y coleg yn Llangefni

Mae Grŵp Llandrillo Menai wedi cael £1.2 miliwn gan 'Raglen Ysgolion a Cholegau ar gyfer yr 21ain Ganrif' Llywodraeth Cymru tuag at brosiect uchelgeisiol i uwchraddio 10 labordy ar ei dri safle.

Yn ogystal, mae Magnox a'r Awdurdod Datgomisiynu Niwclear wedi buddsoddi £386,000 ym mhrosiect LabSTEM i foderneiddio'r cyfleusterau yn Llangefni, Dolgellau a Phwllheli. Grŵp Llandrillo Menai sydd wedi cyfrannu gweddill y pecyn cyllido.

Mae'r tri labordy gwyddoniaeth ar gampws Llangefni wedi cael eu hadnewyddu a'u huwchraddio gyda'r dechnoleg ddiweddaraf. Mae hyn ar ben y tri labordy a gwblhawyd eisoes ar gampysau Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, a bydd labordy arall yn cael ei agor ar gampws Marian Mawr yn Nolgellau i ddarparu cyfleusterau ym maes roboteg a pheirianneg drydanol.

Bwriad LabSTEM yw gwella'r amgylchedd dysgu a phrofiadau'r dysgwyr, denu rhagor o bobl ifanc 16 oed – yn enwedig merched – i astudio Gwyddoniaeth a Pheirianneg, ac ymestyn y cwricwlwm STEM i bynciau fel Peirianneg Fecanyddol a Thrydanol a Roboteg ac Electroneg.

Yn ogystal â darparu cyfleusterau o'r radd flaenaf i ddysgwyr y coleg, bydd y prosiect hefyd yn ffurfio rhan o'r datblygiadau ym maes STEM yng ngogledd-orllewin Cymru drwy ddarparu lleoliadau ar gyfer gweithgareddau a drefnir gan sefydliadau eraill a chyfrannu at strategaeth isranbarthol gydlynol.

Yn agoriad swyddogol y labordai yn Llangefni, esboniodd Pennaeth Coleg Menai a Choleg Meirion-Dwyfor, Aled Jones-Griffith, pam fod y prosiect mor bwysig.

“Bydd "LabSTEM" yn cynnig i'n dysgwyr amgylcheddau a chyfleoedd blaengar a fydd yn gwella eu dysgu. Bydd hyn yn dod â manteision sylweddol i ddysgwyr, cyflogwyr a'r economi ehangach.

"Mae'r galw am bobl ifanc sydd wedi astudio pynciau STEM ar lefel 3 neu uwch, un ai'n academaidd neu'n alwedigaethol, yn tyfu a disgwylir iddo dyfu ymhellach. Dywedir y bydd 75% o holl swyddi'r DU dros ddegawd nesaf yn gofyn am wybodaeth a sgiliau ym maes STEM."

Ychwanegodd,

"Mae'r galw am weithwyr STEM yr un mor gryf yma yng Ngogledd Cymru, ac er bod y cynllun mawr i ddatblygu Wylfa Newydd wedi dod i ben am y tro, mae nifer sylweddol o ddatblygiadau eraill sy'n gysylltiedig ag ynni ar y gweill yn y y rhanbarth."

"Bydd y prosiect moderneiddio hwn yn sicrhau bod gan ein holl ddysgwyr STEM y cyfleusterau ansawdd uchel diweddaraf i gefnogi eu hastudiaethau a'u bod yn cael meithrin y sgiliau sydd eu hangen arnynt i ddatblygu gyrfaoedd llwyddiannus yn yr ardal."

"Rydym yn ddiolchgar tu hwnt i Lywodraeth Cymru, Magnox a NDA am fuddsoddi’n sylweddol yn y prosiect, ac i'r holl bartneriaid lleol sydd wedi cefnogi ein gweledigaeth."

Meddai Jeremy Miles, Gweinidog y Gymraeg ac Addysg,

"Mae Grŵp yr NDA yn buddsoddi tua £15m y flwyddyn yn y cymunedau hynny lle rydym yn datblygu ein cenhadaeth datgomisiynu niwclear, gan drosoli miliynau yn fwy yn y broses.

“Hyd yn hyn mae ein gwaith wedi arwain at ddarparu ysgolion, swyddi, sgiliau a chyfleusterau hyfforddi Newydd yn y cymunedau yr ydym yn gweithredu ynddynt. Mae'r NDA a Magnox wedi ymrwymo i annog a datblygu addysg a sgiliau, a chreu cyfleoedd ar gyfer cyflogaeth gynaliadwy.

Grŵp Llandrillo Menai has secured over £1.2 million pounds from Welsh Government’s ‘21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme’ towards an ambitious project to upgrade 10 laboratories across three of its campuses.

£386,000 has also been invested by Magnox and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) in the LabSTEM project to modernise facilities at Llangefni, Dolgellau, Pwllheli. The remainder of the funding package has been provided by Grŵp Llandrillo Menai.

Three science laboratories at the campus in Llangefni have been refurbished

and upgraded with the latest technology. This is in addition to the three laboratories already completed at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor’s campuses, and a further laboratory will also be created on the Marian Mawr campus in Dolgellau to accommodate robotics and electrical engineering facilities.

The aim of LabSTEM is to enhance the learning environment and improve the learner

experience, attract a greater number of 16 year-olds - in particular girls - to study Science and Engineering, and extend the curriculum offer in STEM subjects such as

Mechanical/Electrical Engineering and Robotics/Electronics.

As well as providing college learners with the world-class facilities, the project will also form

part of the STEM development landscape in North West Wales by providing locations for

activities arranged by other organisations and contributing to a co-ordinated sub-regional

STEM initiative.

Speaking at the official opening of the Llangefni laboratories, Aled Jones-Griffith, Coleg Menai and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor Principal, explained why the project is so important,

“LabSTEM will provide our learners with sector-leading learning environments and opportunities that will enhance their learning. This will bring huge benefits to learners, employers and the wider economy.

“The demand for young people who have studied STEM subjects at Level 3 and above, be that academic or vocational, is growing and expected to grow further. It’s been quoted that 75% of all jobs in the UK over the next decade will require STEM knowledge and skills.”

He added,

“The requirement for STEM employees is just as strong here in North Wales, and while planned large scale developments at Wylfa Newydd have stalled, a significant number of other energy-related developments are progressing or are in the planning stages within the region.

“This modernisation project will ensure that all our STEM learners have the latest, high quality, facilities to support their studies and equip them with the skills they need to develop successful careers in the region.”

“We are extremely grateful to the Welsh Government, Magnox and the NDA and the Welsh Government for their significant investments in the project, and to all our partners in the sector for supporting our vision.”
