This year marks the 50th anniversary since Coleg Llandrillo offered its first higher education course in Rhos-on-Sea: HND Hospitality.

Statistically, the number studying on university-level courses within the college group has increased steadily year-on-year. Today, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai has around 1,200 higher education students studying on 50 different degree courses across its three colleges: Coleg Llandrillo, Coleg Menai and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor. Furthermore, over 400 students graduate each year at the Grŵp’s prestigious ceremony in Llandudno, many with first-class honours.

One sector which is predicted to flourish is the Culinary Arts sector. The college’s Foundation Degree in Culinary Arts is a two or three year undergraduate programme – dependent on either full-time or part-time study - with the option of studying a further year at the college to gain a full BA honours degree in Culinary Arts.

These specialist programmes provide you with expertise, a recognised qualification and the opportunity to enter organisations of culinary and gastronomic innovation. The college group is the only provider of these qualifications in Wales and one of a handful throughout the whole of the UK! Statistics prove that the vast majority of graduates from these courses go on to full-time employment or open their own businesses.

The college’s Hospitality departments were recently awarded an ‘Excellent’ rating by Estyn, her Majesty’s Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales. Estyn inspectors praised the “innovative opportunities for learners to participate in a range of international skills and employability projects” along with the opportunities for “learners to gain highly valuable work-related experience in a professional environment.”

The college’s Hospitality & Catering programme area is the only one in Wales to offer full and part-time courses from Level 1 to Bachelor Honours Degrees in Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts. And what’s more, The Hospitality and Management department at Coleg Llandrillo is equipped with a full range of the latest industry-standard equipment and courses are delivered by an expert team of experienced tutors…some of whom were former Coleg Llandrillo students themselves!

The courses, which are validated and awarded by Bangor University, are focused on providing a range of skills in culinary arts that will equip you for the modern world of hospitality and management.

Culinary Arts practitioners operate within hotels, restaurants, themed pubs, conference venues, exhibition facilities, corporate and sports centres, catering businesses and many other culinary or hospitality contexts.

The UK hospitality industry accounts for nearly ten per cent of UK jobs, making it the third largest industry by employment in the UK, employing 3.2 million people directly.*

Mike Garner, lecturer in Culinary Arts at Coleg Llandrillo, said: “In partnership with Bangor University, and as one of only a handful of higher education providers offering a Culinary Arts degree, we are very proud of our graduates and their achievements. We feel that we are at a turning point within the hospitality industry and are ready to help the next generation of culinary and hospitality professionals move our industry forward. It is a joy and privilege to be part of our students' unique journeys.”

Danny White-Meir, who is a former Coleg Llandrillo graduate and current owner of Enoch’s Fish and Chips (a trendy fish and chips’ bar in Llandudno Junction), said: “It is clear to me that the college is determined to meet both the expectations of students and the hospitality industry as a whole. The lecturers’ professionalism and thoughtful approach to learning is evident and can be seen through the exceptional quality of students, who move on into industry with crucial skills, support and knowledge to propel them further in their careers.”
